Community Engagement and Open Communication
Community members, parents, teachers, administrators and students all have important insights into what it takes to provide a successful learning environment that is also fiscally responsible. We are a diverse community with so many perspectives and talents to share! From farmers to teachers, small business owners to retirees, there are myriad ways for our community to participate in our school community whether it is being a guest reader in an elementary class, attending school board meetings or participating career day. I believe that involvement builds ownership, and when the broader community is engaged and involved at HCS, the district benefits.
The common goal to provide comprehensive public education is a collaborative effort and engagement of district residents, parents, students, teachers and administrators will help inform decisions toward achieving this goal. Through meaningful and ongoing discussions we can ensure that our goals for the school are in keeping with those in our broader community.
Teacher Support and Curriculum
While the curriculum must meet the needs of a wide variety of students, it is teachers who have the education and expertise to implement and enrich the standards set forth by the state. It is important to listen to their needs as it pertains to funding, resources and opportunities for professional development within the constraints of the budget in order to support their efforts to motivate and inspire their students. In order for students to become good citizens, prepared for the modern world, they need a curriculum that is engaging, encourages critical thinking and is diverse in its topics. Teachers, in collaboration with students and parents, are integral to the development of a successful curriculum.
Fiscal Responsibility
School taxes are a necessity to fund the excellent public education that our community values. Thoughtful consideration of the proposed budget is essential to make sure that the tax dollars coming in are allocated where they are most needed to achieve educational goals and pinpoint any wasteful expenditures. Wherever possible the district should look for creative ways to implement cost saving measures that will not negatively impact the health, safety or education of students.
Equity and Inclusion in Education
Promoting equity and inclusion at HCS is essential to a quality education. Every student deserves equal opportunities regardless of their ability, socio-economic background, race, gender, or religion. Using differentiated instruction allows teachers to provide a more tailored learning experience based on individual student needs. Providing a safe and inclusive learning environment allows students to feel valued, respected, and supported, which leads to better academic outcomes and increased engagement. By promoting equity and inclusion, we can help to foster a culture of diversity, respect, and acceptance in our school and community.
